The feeling of nervousness is quite normal when one has to complete a specific job that may be judged by others. Activities, such as appearing in a job interview, delivering a speech, or performing in front of a crowd can be quite unnerving at times. It is quite normal to get edgy in such situations; however, when nervousness overpowers the mind and prompts irrational behavior, it sure is a cause of concern as it prevents one from managing everyday activities, often leading to anxiety.
Chronic anxiety is a form of mental illness, characterized by intense emotions and excessive anxiety. If left untreated, it becomes extremely difficult to manage and control. The person suffering from anxiety may show symptoms like lack of concentration, muscle tension, restlessness, irritability fatigue and sleep disturbance. The symptoms of anxiety are quite intense, often resulting in an increased heart rate, trembling and hot or sweaty feeling. It is caused due to an excessive rush of adrenaline which can severely affect the mental and physical health of a person. However, in case of nervousness, only a meager amount of adrenaline is released enough for the body to deal with.
Nervousness is for a short period of time and in most cases, getting some sleep is enough to relieve the wrecked nerves. But in case of chronic anxiety, one constantly feels tired in spite of sufficient sleep. If an individual is mentally and emotionally wound up in knots, the body feels the tension, leading to tightness of the muscles. If one is just nervous, tightness and tension in the muscles will go away without causing much trouble.
When a person is nervous, concentrating on a task can be difficult, but it is still very much doable. A few minutes of brisk walking or breathing exercise is enough to clear the mind and help get back to work. However, in case of anxiety, it is difficult to maintain focus as the mind completely goes blank. A person dealing with anxiety will have far less patience, frequent mood swings and even smaller tasks would seem overwhelming.
Experiencing trouble while falling asleep and having restless sleep are clear signs of chronic anxiety. One may also have trouble falling asleep the night before a much anticipated event due to nervousness, but it is momentary and linked to a particular cause. As soon as the affair is over, one can go back to sleeping normally.
Experiencing a heightened “startle response” is another difference between anxiety and nervousness. In anxiety, the nervous system is on an overdrive, resulting in a startling response to incidents as small as slamming the door or raging siren of an ambulance. Nervousness can make you startled, but not for a longer period of time and especially not for small things.

If two or more of the above symptoms are present in a person, it is a telltale sign that he/ she is battling with chronic anxiety.
