Bella Hadid gets candid on her struggle with anxiety

Bella Hadid gets candid on her struggle with anxiety

February 07 | By Rachael

Supermodels like Bella Hadid ooze confidence and charm and the common mass is deeply enamored by them. However, the latest revelation by Hadid in a recent episode of “Making a Model,” a reality show run by her own mother Yolanda Hadid belies this facade. While conversing with some of the contestants about the competition, she opened her heart about her fight with anxiety when one of the contestants began to talk about the challenges of suffering from social anxiety.

Speaking candidly about her problem, Bella said that she is quite different from her sister Gigi Hadid. Compared to Gigi, whom she defined as “bubbly and out there,” she is far more reserved. To be a part of the glamour world, an introvert characteristic proved to be a major deterrent for her. Describing her struggle with anxiety, she added, “I would literally start crying and shaking if I had to do interviews at red carpet events. It was really nerve-racking and it’s scary and it’s not only you.”

The model has literally grown better over the years and is now confident about handling the limelight. However, she still gets nervous at times. Talking about how she learnt to deal with her anxiety, she said, “It gets a lot better once you have to talk to people every day. Then you’re like, ‘Okay, I guess it’s my job, I have to do it!” She also grappled with the insecurities related to her body and weight, which is quite prevalent among young women, especially models.

Understanding causes and effects of anxiety disorders

Occasional anxiety is normal and can affect anyone. One might face it at work, before taking a test, making an important decision, etc. However, the persistence of irrational and exaggerated anxieties can lead to anxiety disorders, a serious mental health condition.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), anxiety disorders affect approximately 40 million adults in the United States. A number of factors such as genes, environmental factors, stress, hormonal changes, etc. can trigger this condition. It can affect an individual in a number of forms like panic disorder, social anxiety disorder (SAD), and phobias among others.

Any kind of delay in determining the presence of this illness can prove dangerous and even to lead to risky behaviors like suicide. Therefore, one must be aware about some of the common signs and symptoms so that it becomes easier to identify anxiety disorder. Some of the common symptoms observed in people dealing with anxiety disorders include:

  • Panic attacks
  • Fearfulness
  • Feeling uneasy
  • Disturbed sleeping pattern
  • Inability to stay calm
  • Tingling in hands or feet
  • Shortness of breath
  • Heart palpitations
  • Dry mouth
  • Feeling of nausea
  • Stressed muscles
  • Dizziness

It is important to ensure that the conditions like anxiety disorders are diagnosed at the right time to determine the most appropriate treatment according to the needs and requirements of every patient. A range of therapies is available for the treatment of anxiety disorders, such as talk therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), etc.

Besides these therapies, a number of self-help groups, support groups, medications and self-help techniques speed up the recovery process. Since anxiety disorders affect every individual differently, it is important to seek medical advice and not opt for any possible treatment option at one’s own discretion.

Road to recovery

Recovery from anxiety disorders is possible. Like Bella, many celebrities suffering from psychiatric diseases have successfully recovered from their condition. In fact, they are now leading a healthy life. To attain recovery, one needs to stay persistent in his or her efforts and stay committed toward his or her goal.
